Howard Sutch Memorial Award

The rotating Howard Sutch Award has been a long standing memorial to Mr. Howard Sutch. The award is given out every year at the Lake County Fair and has been held in high regard as one of the most prestigious honors a 4-H member can accomplish as a youth.

The Howard Sutch Award is given to the most deserving and accomplished applicant. Only youth of the Lake County, Ohio 4-H program, who is a member of a horse club, is a candidate for this award. There is no age limit for the applicant, however, they should be deserving, and well accomplished in the areas of interest. The 4-H’er must be nominated by an advisor of the club that he or she is a member. The applicant must also fill out an application similar to a resume. The applicant will also be expected to write an essay based on a given topic. The essay will be of relevant topic specific to the award. Upon receiving the essays by a specific date they will be given to a panel of local judges to be read over. The judges will at this time narrow the field of applicants (depending on size of application pool) down to between 3-5 finalists. The finalists will be notified and asked to meet with the panel of judges at a date near to or at the Lake County Fair. The applicants will briefly interview with the judges. Following interview the judges will make their final selection to receive the rotating Howard Sutch Award. The winner of the award will be announced at the Lake County Fair at a time agreed upon by the Lake County Fair Board and the Lake County Saddle Horse Committee. Note: judging process subject to change by Lake County Fair Board.

The applicant should be a well rounded member of a Lake County 4-H horse club. This means that he or she should be accomplished not only as an equestrian, but as a student and a well standing member of society. The applicant must be nominated by a 4-H advisor of the club that he or she is currently a member. The nomination should include such topics as personal integrity, school related activities, extra-curricular activities and a description of the members involvement in 4-H. The nomination is open to include a multitude of topics relevant to the award. The nomination should be typed, legible, well written and signed by the advisor. The nomination will be attached to the application and the essay and given to the judges as consideration for the award. The judges will be qualified members of high regard in the local community and the applications, nominations and essays should be well written and worthy of their consideration.
